Workplace Wellness

At an increasing number of corporations around the state, health benefits aren’t just for paying doctor’s bills.

It’s 5:30 pm, you have a neck cramp that won’t quit, and there’s a pile in your in-box that can’t be ignored. Your job can be draining—mentally and physically—but you can start feeling better without even leaving the office.

The National Business Group on Health, a consulting firm and advocacy group representing 214 large employers nationwide, recently concluded that an investment in human capital can improve the bottom line. Fitness programs and initiatives by 84 surveyed businesses showed that 56 percent experienced an increase in workplace morale.

Lucent Technologies, whose three largest offices are located in Murray Hill, Whippany, and Holmdel, offers not only a fitness facility at each site but online resources through the Mayo Clinic to help employees learn more about their health concerns. An annual heath fair offers on-site health consultations and educates individuals on their health risks, ultimately reinforcing the value of both the Web resources and the gym.

“Convenience is everything,” says Dr. Lawrence G. Shoner, vice president of health services at Lucent Technologies. “Here, what you find is people within the same work group encourage each other and often go down [to the gym] as a team.”

As part of the Lifeworks program at Johnson & Johnson, whose corporate offices are located in New Brunswick, employees can find resources at Lunch and Learn nutritional seminars and counseling sessions aimed at attaining that elusive work/life balance. Companies are willing to let the treadmills run and bikes spin during operating hours. Corporations spend money on wellness programs as incentives for successful teams.

Joachim Becker, owner of New Jersey Holistic Health Services, provides meditation sessions and popular chair massage services to companies like Parsippany-based Champion Mortgage. He says these perks increase employees’ productivity and energy, and “people then feel better about the company in general. If the company can offer another worthwhile benefit beyond the paycheck, it adds to the image of the company in the end.”
