Massage Descriptions:
Zen Shiatsu: Japanese massage style that treats the energy meridians of the body to unblock the flow of ki and help the body meridians and organs rebalance. Involves acupressure and light stretching. Usually done fully clothed in loose comfortable clothes on a mat but can also be worked into table massages. Involves acupressure, palming, and stretching.
Thai Massage: Thai Massage adjusts the sen (energy lines) of the body through acupressure, palming, and extensive stretching. Thai massage is often called "passive yoga" or "lazy man's yoga." Thai massage is usually done fully clothed on a mat while wearing loose comfortable clothes but thai massage techniques can also be incorporated into an integrative table massage. I mix Northern Style (which is more gentle and focuses more on palming) with Southern Style Thai Massage (which involves more thumbing and more aggressive stretching) into a 90 minute or 2 hour routine.
Swedish Massage - Relaxing oil based treatment involving a combination of long gliding strokes, kneading, light to medium friction, and in some cases vibration or percussion and gentle stretching. Increases circulation of blood and lymph, relaxes, and may assist with injury recovery and release of scar tissue adhesions.
Deep Tissue Massage Massage, often focused on specific problem areas in the sub-layer of musculature and fascia, intended to increase flexibility, free adhesions, reduce chronic pain, and assist with injury prevention or rehabilitation. Usually starts and ends with Swedish relaxation techniques but involves deeper pressure, more friction, and focus on specific problem areas rather than the whole body. Can be done with or without oil.
Myofascial/Myskeletal massage: Deep slow massage, often with no oil or lotion, concentrated on problem areas and connective tissue in other connected areas of the body. Intended to lengthen connective tissue and release stuck joints.
Integrative Massage Integration of two or more massage styles, focusing on problem areas, I often integrate deep tissue, shiatsu, and lomilomi or lomilomi, deep tissue, and hot stone massage.
Aromatherapy The use of essential oils from herbs, flowers, resins, woods, and roots to assist with treatment. Essential oils may be mixed in the massage oil in an oil based massage or in some cases may be applied directly. Essential oils may also be used in a diffuser or poultices and may be used on linens or in hydrotherapy treatments. Various oils can be used to greatly assist with relaxation or stimulation and may also be potent mood enhancers. May not be appropriate for people with allergies or for women who are pregnant or attempting to get pregnant.
Pregnancy Massage: Massage during pregnancy, generally involves Swedish massage work in the side lying or semi-reclining position, but some deep tissue technques can also be carefully applied.
