Description: What is Stress?
Stress finds its origin in the sympathetic nervous system. When activated, the sympathetic (fight/flight) nervous system sends energy away from the viscera (organs) to the muscles in preparation for a self defense. Ideally, after the situation dissipates, one's nervous system returns to a parasympathetic (normal) state. It is when the nervous system remains in a chronic sympathetic state that stress arises.

Modern society no longer presents us with the simplicity of an ideal fight or flight situation. These days, our strict societal norms prevent us from being able to release this immense energy. When our bosses chastise us, we cannot retort for fear of losing our jobs. When debt appears insurmountable, we cannot run away. Thus, these sympathetic desires become wholly unexpressed. Energy continues to be drawn away from the viscera (organs) causing poor digestion, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, bone loss, etc. Unchecked, these can lead to serious conditions such as type II diabetes, osteoporosis, heart attack, and even cancer! Thus, it becomes imperative that one find ways to reduce his/her stress levels and return to a parasympathetic state.

How does one reduce stress?
Regular body work, such as massage, is a superb way of directly relaxing the sympathetic nervous system. Studies show that massage actually stimulates the production and release of both seritonin and endorphins. Seritonin, which is responsible for one's feeling of 'well being', and Endorphins, which are responsible for the 'runner's high', act to counterbalance the sympathetic nervous system returning it to a normal and relaxed state.

With this knowledge in hand I provide therapeutic body work designed to bring my clients to a state of deep relaxation. As such, one can experience alleviation from all sorts of stress related conditions.

Talk to me about massage packages, and receive a complimentary chocolate bar to boost that seritonin just a little bit more on your first session!

Make massage part of your regular health regimen. Give me a call!
